The average cost of studying in the UK is lower than in both the US and Australia. You will find that graduates from the UK are some of the most employable people in the world. In fact, seven in ten international students say that they are progressing further, get promoted faster, and make more money. This means that you are likely to have a successful career if you put money into it.
Still, it can be hard to decide whether or not to spend a lot of money on your education. Here are some specifics about how much money you will need to study in the UK.
How much does it cost to study in the UK?
Course fees
Course fees in the UK depend on your level of study and where you are taking the course.
International students can expect to pay between £10,000 and £26,000 per year, and most bachelor’s degree programmes in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland take three years to complete. Most bachelor’s degrees in Scotland take four years to finish.
Some degrees, like medicine, take longer and may cost more no matter where you study. But in the UK, many master’s degrees can be finished in one year if the student works full-time. This means lower living costs and getting a job faster than with a traditional two-year master’s program.
Check with the university or college you want to attend about how much the course fees are. Most of the time, you can find this information on their website.
Living costs
You can expect to spend between £800 and £1,300 a month on rent, bills, food, and other costs of living.
For example, you should put money aside for:
- around £20-£30 for the weekly shop
- from £30 a month for travel
- from £10 a month for a mobile phone contract
- around £2.50 for a cup of coffee, from a high street café
- around £40 a month for a gym membership
Costs can vary a lot depending on where in the UK you live and how much you want to spend. The cost of living is proportionally higher in London and other big cities in the UK.
If you have a scholarship or other form of financial aid, make sure you know what it covers before you come to the UK. This will help you plan your budget.
Other costs
When you study in the UK for more than six months, you have to pay for other things. For instance:
- £363 for your UK student visa, which will let you live and study in the UK during your course (this is a one-off charge)
- After the 25% discount for student visa holders, the Immigration Health Surcharge costs £470 per year and gives you access to the UK’s National Health Service.
Discounts
When you arrive at your university, you will usually get an ID card when you sign up. You can use this to get discounts at many stores, restaurants, and other businesses, like theatres and movie theaters. Just make sure to always ask if student discounts are available.
The National Union of Students (NUS) recommends the TOTUM card as the only way to get discounts, prove your age, and keep up with student life. Both the TOTUM card and the International Student Identity Card (ISIC) also give students great discounts in stores and online. Check out one of these cards to see if it could help you save money.
Railcards
International students can get discount railcards that take one-third off the price of national train fares and off-peak Tube travel in London. They cost £30 a year and could save you up to £200 a year on train travel in the UK.Find out more about railcards.
